This presentation will explore the route and events of the march through the heart of Georgia in the fall of 1864 and will discuss tactical and strategic implications to the theater and the momentum of the war.
The trip leaves from Sylva Oct 24 and will travel by rented van to Montgomery AL and tour Confederate Naval Ship Yard and possibly several other Civil War sites The trip will continue to Spanish Fort AL for check-in at the Microtel by Wyndam Hotels.
Sat, 8/25 we will go on a tour led by John Mason, the October Round Table speaker. Much of the tour will be around Fort Gaines, located closest to where the actual battle took place. Also included in the tour will be Fort Blakely, the site of the last major battle East of the Mississippi and the surrender of thousands of Confederate troops. Many of the original fortifications still exist on the site. We will return home on Sunday.
It is estimated that the cost, not including lunch and dinner will be $180. That includes transportation and fees as well as double hotel occupancy and breakfast. Registration and a non-refundable fee is due NO LATER THAN Oct 1.
The mission of the Western North Carolina Civil War Round Table is to promote interest in and disseminate knowledge of the American Civil War through various speakers at regular Round Table meetings and other special events. It shall also be a goal of the Round Table to promote, encourage, and support Civil War Battlefield Preservation.
